A High Impact Tech Strategy Role

In this role you’ll help guide PACCAR’s exploration, thinking, and projects around cutting-edge technology. You’ll build relationships in the tech startup ecosystem, identify great partners, set up compelling collaborations, and ensure strong win-win outcomes. Through this ecosystem engagement, you’ll form points of view on industry tech trends and contribute to our internal strategy discussion on where and how PACCAR should play.

The Center’s areas of focus span across the mobility space, with the greatest emphasis on L2 and L4 autonomy. Electric vehicles and data platforms are also important priorities. In addition, we stay connected to a broad array of technologies such as 3D printing, heads up displays, predictive maintenance, and more. Advancements in new tech are opening up a number of new opportunities that PACCAR is actively exploring.

The Director of Business Development is an executive role with high visibility both within and outside of PACCAR. The position reports to the General Manager of the Innovation Center, who reports to PACCAR’s CTO.

Responsibilities Include:

Startup Ecosystem

  • Build and develop ecosystem relationships with startups, investors, suppliers, and accelerators.
  • Manage PACCAR’s strategic relationships with Level 4 autonomy developers.
  • Generate and communicate high level assessments of startup company concepts, technology and staff.
  • Identify, pitch, and oversee high impact collaborations.

Company Representation

  • Host visiting groups of strategic PACCAR customers.
  • Drive PACCAR’s annual tech presence at CES.
  • Represent PACCAR at mobility events, both as an attendee and as a guest speaker.

Strategic Direction

  • Identify, research, hypothesize, and present on strategic topics critical to PACCAR’s future.
  • Provide internal thought leadership on how cutting-edge technology should shape PACCAR’s strategic directives.
  • Structure work modules and workshops.

Here is What We're Looking For

Education and Background

  • Candidates must have an MBA or equivalent education.
  • Deep experience in understanding market dynamics and forming effective competitive strategy is critical.
  • A technical background in science or engineering is helpful, although not strictly required. Comfort with science and technology is a must.
  • Experience in automotive is helpful but not required.


Problem Solving and Strategic Thinking

  • Self-starter who can independently identify high value activities, make plans, and execute effectively with limited oversight.
  • Possess the intellectual horsepower to quickly come up to speed on new topics.
  • Comfortable selecting and applying suitable business frameworks to address strategic challenges.
  • Skilled at structuring work processes in the face of uncertainty and ambiguity.
  • Good lateral thinker who can pull together disparate information and ideas to create unique and defensible ideas.
  • Ability to skillfully consider multiple business dynamics to create a clear view of future states 5+ years out.

Networking and Communication

  • Strong written and spoken communication skills towards an executive audience.
  • Skilled networker who can readily connect with new people and build effective business relationships.
  • Mentally strong negotiator who can drive mutually beneficial outcomes.
  • Advanced interviewing, listening, and rapport building skills.
  • Comfortable facilitating small group discussions and activities. Facilitation experience is a plus.
  • Superb poise and professionalism to represent PACCAR.


This is a full-time in-person role at our Sunnyvale, California office.
