Position Description:

The Aerodynamic Engineer will be responsible for a range of tasks including, but not limited to, CFD analysis/simulations, physical testing, and documentation. The development of aerodynamic trucks requires a broad knowledge of ground vehicle performance, which includes external flows, thermal design, and acoustic performance. The ability to lead and support these activities while working with technical and non-technical groups is necessary to achieve an optimal solution. The position will work closely with vendors and other specialists within PACCAR to increase the performance and efficiency of the vehicle through design, documentation, and process development.

 

Functions/Responsibilities:

  • Use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software to analyze air flow for vehicle exterior, under hood, and interior systems
  • Run CFD simulations in support of government regulations (GHG2) and organize results
  • Use of CAD software to assemble models that will be used for CFD simulations
  • Assist in building functional prototype parts for use in physical testing
  • Participate in physical aerodynamic testing (coastdown, windtunnel)
  • Maintain documentation to organize procedures and data
  • Maintain database of aerodynamic results and features related to GHG2 regulations
  • Identify opportunities on the vehicle for increased aerodynamic efficiency and present ideas for further development by:
  • Working with vendors to increase aerodynamic performance
  • Become immersed with various engineering groups to convey aerodynamic results and protect aero performance through product design
  • Simultaneously coordinate multiple aerodynamic projects within the organization

 

Qualifications/Skills

  • 2+ years’ experience conducting CFD analysis & aerodynamic design/development
  • 3+ years’ experience using CAD
  • Effective problem solving skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to technical and non-technical groups
  • Basic understanding of coding, preferably using Python

 

Candidate Requirements:

  • BS in Engineering required
  • PE or Master’s degree preferred
  • Experience analyzing and resolving large data sets a preference
  • Experience building, machining and/or prototyping products a benefit
  • Previous experience with commercial vehicles preferred
