Date: Aug 23, 2021

Location: Mt Vernon, WA, US, 98273-9671

Company: PACCAR

Requisition Summary

PACCAR’s Technical Center, which serves both Kenworth and Peterbilt, has an opening for a user interface designer.  We need an expert in digital graphics UI (both static and motion animation) with a healthy overlap in UX skills.  In this position, you will be supporting the creation of in-cab display content for heavy and medium duty trucks.  You will be on the leading edge of defining future user interfaces in trucking, including transition to electrical power trains, incorporation of Advanced Driver Assistive Technology (ADAS), integrating multiple forms of infotainment / communication applications, and the transition to higher levels of automation.  The focus of this job is for design of in-vehicle interfaces and not desktop, mobile phone, or web based HMI.  Sensitivity to the needs of designing for a driver is paramount.  The position ideally will be filled with someone experienced in the domain of embedded system UX specific to automotive applications.  We are a small team and every member will need the ability to flex across multiple traditional UX / UI / User Test and documentation roles.  Effective communication and organizational skills will be a critical.

Job Functions / Responsibilities

  • Perform initial design definition setting, benchmarking and user research activities, including specification reviews to define project scope:
    • Lead brainstorming and concept development sessions internally and with drivers
    • Elicit and analyze business requirements through interviews and workshops
    • Develop use cases, personas, scenarios and storyboards
    • Work within multi-disciplinary teams to ideate on design challenges as well as to evaluate the feasibility of proposed solutions
  • Serve as a combination User Experience and Interaction Designer.  Develop user interface strategy within a constrained implementation scope.  Create screen-level interaction designs that vary from low-fidelity sketches to higher-fidelity layouts.
  • Document the detailed user interface interaction model in specification format, with enough level of detail that a separate software team can generate the design.  Be adept at using multiple forms of communication besides just words; i.e. images, animations, or task interaction flow charts.
  • Work with prototype development engineers on test article creation and the usability tester to craft usability testing that supports design progression via the capture of driver feedback.
  • Help establish / define user interface design procedures for the company, and suggest associated infrastructure necessary for the development of in-vehicle display systems.
  • Collaborate with the rest of the UX team, Industrial Design, Vehicle Integration Engineers, Software Engineering, Product Planning, and Program Managers.
  • Stay abreast of UX trends and look for creative ideas / inspiration from parallel analogous worlds.  Have a hunger for learning ways to get better, more efficient, try new things, etc.
  • The position will require a fair amount of independent work and travel between multiple PACCAR locations should be expected.

  • 3 years or more designing effective user interface functionality for automotive applications.  Transitioning between a UX focus vs. UI focus is acceptable.  The ideal candidate will have the right experience level to ‘hit the ground running’ to design instrumentation interfaces and in-vehicle display interactions with some degree of independence.
  • Ability to lead a project through the user-centered design process and follow interaction design best practices and methodologies.
  • Understanding of in-vehicle display technologies, developing driver assistive systems and their associated HMI.  Ideally also acquainted with the typical automotive product development lifecycle and it’s pace and phases. Plus familiarity with in-vehicle user interface design standards or guidelines (from sources such as NHTSA / DOT, SAE, ISO, etc.)
  • Working experience with appropriate software tools for interface creation including Adobe XD, Photoshop, Illustrator, and After Effects.  Plus experience with initial design wire framing and software prototyping tools such as: Axure, Balsamiq, Unity, Unreal, Godot, HTML, etc.
  • A high level of proficiency in typical office applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Visio, Teams, etc. (in the Windows operating system environment).

  • Ability to clearly communicate conceptual ideas and design rationale to other members of the design, development and leadership teams.
  • Proficient at interpreting the results from user research (primarily usability testing on prototype interfaces, but also heuristic evaluation and expert reviews; contextual inquiry; surveys; benchmarking, etc.) and using those results to iterate interface designs based upon that data.
  • Ability to manage time wisely across projects and competing priorities, meet agreed upon deadlines, and be accountable for work, even in a fluid environment with shifting priorities.
  • High quality interpersonal skills and team-work environment sensitivity.  Desire to contribute to a fun working group culture that has a low-turnover rate and high level of stability.
  • Experience in the heavy truck industry desirable, but even just being someone who ‘really likes cars’ certainly helps.  Having a CDL, or interest in getting one, would be beneficial to truly understand the users perspective.  An appreciation that trucks are not just ‘big cars’.

  • BA/BS or MA/MS degree in some field related to the job described above; Ergonomics / Human Factors, Industrial Design, Graphic Design, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Usability Engineering, Interface Design, Visual Design in Computing, etc.  Or at a minimum similar vocational training that developed design skills listed above coupled with a very strong experience base and demonstrated capability.
  • Provide a work portfolio that demonstrates systematic and creative design thinking as well as a deep understanding of UI/UX best practices via examples of your work.  Include examples of methods of communicating design intent to team members, and if relevant, examples of user data collection process, methodology, and results summary.
