This position is within the Advanced Development Team at Kenworth and involves defining next-generation electrified powertrains. We are looking for Controls Engineer who has experience, understanding, and intuition for the physics of electrified powertrains for heavy duty trucks. This person will be responsible for control system algorithm development, integration, build and test of controls. Responsibilities will also include field test data analysis, complex system/component level trouble shooting and bench/dyno/vehicle testing.  The successful candidate will also work with external research and engineering organizations that are partnered with PACCAR.

Job Functions / Responsibilities:

 

  • Participate in the definition, development and validation of electrified powertrains for heavy-duty trucks.
  • Work in a collaborative small-team environment to explore and evaluate advanced vehicle technologies.
  • Be the lead person responsible for the concept, design and implementation of controls architecture and coding to support advanced technologies projects.
  • Develop complex control strategies for various heavy duty applications using software in the loop, hardware in the loop, and system testing.
  • System modeling of complex heavy duty vehicle components including thermal modeling, fluid flow modeling, system integration, simulation, analysis, laboratory testing and validation.
  • Build new software and calibrations and validate for production release.
  • Gain and apply broad product knowledge to implement new technologies to meet changing requirements in the heavy-duty truck market.
  • Work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment with internal and external organizations to explore and test future technologies.
  • Leverage internal product development processes and Six Sigma skills to ensure high quality results, manage progress and report updates.

 

Qualifications & Skills:

 

  • 4-year degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a related field; Master’s degree in business or engineering and P.E. certificate are preferred
  • Background in control system design, signal processing, PID loops, dynamic system modeling, and experience in applying these disciplines to heavy duty commercial truck systems
  • 3+ years of experience in MATLAB/Simulink/Stateflow based controls development, code generation, debugging, unit test, integration, and systems test
  • 3+ years of experience with Vector Canalyzer, ATI calibration tools, and data collection tools
  • Understanding of automotive Class 8 communication protocols (J1939, CAN, KWP-2000, UDS)
  • Capable of analyzing vehicle performance in MATLAB/Simulink via modeling and data analysis
  • Basic knowledge of Pro/E or other similar solid modeling software
  • Familiarity with project management methods and tools
  • Candidate should be willing to make use of engineering processes and techniques and be resourceful in solving complex technical problems
  • Ability to manage costs, time and resources; strong communication skills.
