The Opportunity

An exciting opportunity is available for an experienced Heavy Vehicle Technician to step into a Leading Hand role within our workshop team. Reporting to the Workshop Supervisor, you will play a key role in supporting the day-to-day operations of the workshop, providing technical guidance, mentoring technicians and apprentices, and helping drive a high-performing, customer-focused culture. This is a hands-on leadership role where you will lead by example, ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently and to the highest quality standards.

Responsibilities:

• Support the Workshop Supervisor in coordinating daily workshop activities and workflow.
• Provide technical guidance, coaching and mentoring to technicians and apprentices.
• Allocate work effectively to ensure productivity, quality and customer satisfaction targets are achieved.
• Monitor and maintain high standards of workmanship, safety and compliance.
• Assist with diagnosing complex vehicle repairs and provide technical support to the team.
• Conduct vehicle road tests where required to support accurate diagnosis and repairs.
• Ensure workshop equipment and tooling are maintained and operating effectively.
• Promote safe work practices and contribute to a positive and collaborative team culture.
• Drive continuous improvement initiatives that enhance workshop efficiency and customer outcomes.
• Support the achievement of operational, financial and customer service objectives.

About you:

• Trade qualified Heavy Vehicle Mechanic (Certificate III Heavy Commercial Vehicle Mechanical Technology or equivalent).
• Extensive experience in heavy vehicle, truck or diesel engine maintenance and repairs.
• Proven ability to lead, coach and mentor technicians and apprentices.
• Strong diagnostic, troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
• Safety-focused with a commitment to quality workmanship.
• Excellent communication and people leadership skills.
• Organised, adaptable and able to prioritise in a fast-paced workshop environment.
• Customer-focused with a strong sense of accountability.
• Experience with Auto-IT or similar workshop management systems is advantageous.
• Positive, proactive leader who leads by example and supports team success.
