Job Description

Kenworth has a User Interface designer position open in their Design Department located in Renton, WA.  In this position, you will have the opportunity to be part of a forming UX and UI team within PACCAR developing and supporting interface designs on heavy and medium-duty trucks.  The skillset needed is related to on-screen visual design, motion design, and 3-D graphic design as they are applied to embedded system architectures within next-generation vehicle instrumentation systems.  The work will primarily focus on in-vehicle displays, it’s important to realize that there is minimal work anticipated for desktop, mobile phone, or web-based HMI.  As such, the ideal candidate will need to have a keen respect for preventing driver distraction – as driving a truck is different from using an interface while sitting at a desk, or holding a phone.  Ideal candidates have experience in the domain of UX/UI specific to automotive applications.  The role will report within the Kenworth design department and will collaborate across multiple PACCAR facilities as the UX expertise and industrial design talent is distributed vs. centrally located.  Effective communication of design intent will be a critical skill, as you will need to communicate to both PACCAR leadership and remote design team members.

This position is an on-site role located in Renton, WA. At this time this role does not support any type of VISA sponsorship, now or in the future.

  • Work with a UX team to develop brand-specific user interface visual and motion elements that support a shared UX structure.
  • Create screen-level visual designs from low-fidelity sketches to high-fidelity pixel-perfect mockups.
  • Consider and design flowing motion into graphics that include rendered possibilities using full 3-D geometry.
  • Develop use cases, personas, scenarios, and storyboards to guide and inspire visual design aspects.
  • Work within multi-disciplinary teams to ideate on design challenges as well as to evaluate the feasibility of proposed solutions.
  • Assist in the preparation of visual graphics and motion files to create prototypes.  This might include working closely with the usability test engineer and software implementation team.
  • Collaborate with the rest of the UX team, other Industrial Designers, Vehicle Integration Engineers, Software Engineering, Product Planning, and Program Managers.
  • Stay abreast of UX and UI trends and look for creative ideas/inspiration from parallel analogous worlds.
  • Additional graphic design and presentation support for the Design department as needed.
  • The position will require a fair amount of independent work and travel between multiple PACCAR locations is expected.

Qualifications & Skills

  • 4+ years designing professional, high-quality, effective interfaces; ideally for in-vehicle applications.
  • 2+ years in the automotive/transportation industry preferred.
  • Ability to start the creative process through various design exploration techniques, research, mood-board creation, and storyboarding.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in graphic design, motion graphics, digital art, sensitivity to typography, color, layout, and general awareness of materials/textures.
  • Working experience creating user interface designs and associated specifications with appropriate software tools for interface layouts.  An expert in Adobe CC Suite including Illustrator, Photoshop, etc.;
  • 3D know-how and/or motion design know-how (e.g. Cinema 4D and After Effects)
  • Ideally have some working experience with software prototyping tools, such as: Balsamiq, Axure, HTML, etc.;
  • Proficiency in typical office applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Visio, etc.
  • Understanding of in-vehicle display technology, associated HMI, and the typical automotive product development lifecycle.
  • Experience in the heavy truck industry is desirable, especially first-hand driving knowledge.
  • Ability to clearly communicate conceptual ideas and design rationale to other members of the design, development, and leadership teams. Communication skills also need to be reciprocal. The ideal candidate is a good listener with excellent observation and user interview skills.
  • Proficient at interpreting the results from user research (primarily usability testing on prototype interfaces, but also heuristic evaluation and expert reviews; contextual inquiry; surveys; benchmarking, etc.) and using those results to iterate interface designs based upon that data.
  • Strong understanding of the user-centered design process and interaction design best practices and methodologies.
  • Ability to deal with fluid and changing workflow based upon shifting priorities.
  • Ability to perform in a fast-paced, results-oriented environment.
  • Ability to manage time wisely across projects and competing priorities, meet agreed-upon deadlines, and be accountable for work.

Education Requirements

  • A degree in Industrial Design, Graphic Design, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Usability Engineering, Interface Design, Visual Design in Computing, or similar vocational training that developed design skills.
