Job Description

The Senior Digital Modeler’s expertise is in generating concept and Class-A models using Alias to translate the design intent while incorporating the technical, engineering, and manufacturing criteria. Their objective is to capture that intent using Alias and/or ICEM Surf (Alias strongly preferred) through the guidance and direction of the designers. They are responsible for ensuring model continuity and integrity, the transfer and export of data, and release of high-quality Class-A surface data to Engineering groups and suppliers. They also support the Modeling Studio clay property builds and rendering development. Senior Digital Modeler reports to the Design Manager.


This position is an on-site role, and located in Renton, WA. This role does not support any type of VISA sponsorship, now or in the future. 


Here's what you will do in this role:

  • Creative Alias modeler

  • Understand all phases of the Industrial Design process.

  • Develop concept surfaces utilizing scan data, design sketches, 3D sketch models and verbal direction

  • Develop the highest quality Class-A models from concept models

  • Solve complex surface development with minimal supervision.

  • Work closely with the Studio Engineer, Designers, Modeling Studio staff, and Engineering Department to develop data that meets design requirements, packaging and manufacturing constraints.

  • With the support of the Studio Engineer, coordinate packaging constraints with Product Engineering, PTC, and suppliers to ensure accurate CAD surface models and scale model development

  • Identify, prioritize, and coordinate resolution of manufacturing feasibility between Industrial Design and Engineering Design.

  • Proactively define issues and force early resolution and consensus

  • Manage and release to the Studio Engineer Class-A Alias and/or ICEM models from approved styling themes

  • Handle multiple tasks, responding rapidly to model or packaging revisions and product changes as requested from Product Planning, Engineering and/or Industrial Design staff.

  • Manage programs and projects to deliver product within schedule and budget targets.

  • Professionally and successfully communicate (verbal/written) with strong, effective interpersonal abilities


Qualifications and Skills:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Design, Transportation or Engineering related field highly preferred.

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in creating concept and Class-A advanced digital surfaces required.

  • Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in transportation design studio desired.

  • Highly proficient Alias or ICEM Surf skills.  Alias strongly preferred.

  • Knowledge of and experience in heavy truck assembly, heavy truck components and systems preferred.

  • Strong surface modeling skills and the ability to handle multiple assignments. Highly creative, motivated and team oriented.

  • Ability to perform in a fast-paced, results-oriented environment.

  • Portfolio required demonstrating skills and projects.

  • May need to pass surfacing test

  • Must be able to develop constructive relationships across departments and across divisions (PB and DAF).

  • Flexibility to meet changing priorities.
