Requisition Summary

This position is located within the Advanced Powertrain organization at PTC and involves developing and evaluating advanced controls for next-generation electrified powertrain systems and engines for on-road truck applications. This includes analysis and optimization of advanced technologies for PACCAR’s integrated powertrain, and transfer of these technologies to production programs.  Additional responsibilities include interfacing with PACCAR divisions (Embedded Engineering, Kenworth, Peterbilt and DAF).  The person will also work with external research and engineering organizations that are partnered with PACCAR.

Division Information

The PACCAR Technical Center provides engineering excellence to the truck, engine, and winch divisions of PACCAR Inc through innovative product development and testing.This position is located in located in Farmington Hills, Michigan.

Job Functions / Responsibilities

  • Design control strategies for advanced heavy-duty vehicle integrated powertrain concepts including kinetic energy management, electrical energy management, and V2V related features
  • Understand, catalog, and ensure proper utilization of existing PACCAR control strategies
  • Prove and optimize control strategies using 1-D vehicle simulation
  • Implement strategies in prototype hardware then test and optimize control strategies on vehicles and in test cells
  • Communicate results and recommendations to team and stakeholders on a regular basis and cooperate with cross-divisional counterparts
  • Keep abreast of emerging technologies, tools, and methods
  • Transfer advanced control strategies to production programs at relevant PACCAR divisions


  • 5-10 years’ experience in embedded controls development, preferably applied to heavy duty vehicle systems
  • Strong background in heavy duty vehicle controls architecture and powertrain controls development
  • Strong background in vehicle physics
  • Background in powertrain simulation
  • In-depth knowledge of controls development and prototyping tools (e.g. Simulink, Mathworks Embedded Software Tools, DSpace)
  • Strong programming skills: C/C++, Matlab or Python
  • Knowledge of 1-D simulation tools (eg. AVL Cruise, GT-Power, Simulink)
  • Demonstrated skills developing and optimizing control strategies with experiments
  • Previously demonstrated strong technical knowledge, analysis, and communication skills. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills, be a self-starter and have demonstrated high levels of initiative and innovation.


Bachelors or Masters (preferred) degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Engineering Physics
