Requisition Summary

PACCAR, global manufacturer of heavy-duty transportation equipment, including Kenworth, Peterbilt, Foden and DAF trucks, seeks a Materials Engineer with Metallurgy Expertise for their Technical Center in Mount Vernon, Washington.

The materials engineering position will support the development of heavy-duty truck products. Responsibilities will include development of test programs, laboratory testing, analysis of results, and failure analysis. This engineer will be part of PACCAR’s Materials Engineering group, and will communicate with PACCAR’s truck divisions, multiple levels of management, external suppliers, and customers.

Division Information

The PACCAR Technical Center provides engineering excellence to the truck, engine, and winch divisions of PACCAR Inc through innovative product development and testing. The Technical Center is located in the Skagit Valley about 65 miles north of Seattle, Washington. 

Job Functions / Responsibilities

  • Support current product issues and new product development related to  metals
  • Perform laboratory evaluations and failure analysis of metal components
  • Prepare clear, concise laboratory reports for material and component testing and investigations
  • Evaluate test methods using rigorous statistical methodology
  • Design test fixtures and develop test methods with support of senior engineers
  • Work with design engineers, quality engineers, and suppliers to develop test plans and conduct testing.


  • Bachelor of science in metallurgical engineering, materials science engineering, or related engineering field
  • Working knowledge of metals and metal manufacturing processes
  • 2-5 years’ experience working in the metals industry, preferably in the automotive or transportation industries. Failure analysis experience is desired.
  • Working knowledge of statistics and sampling
  • Ability to summarize technical issues and communicate effectively verbally and in writing
  • Ability to manage workload and respond to shifting time and project demands
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Ability to quickly grasp and execute duties with minimal verbal or written instruction, and to initiate appropriate actions when needed without direct oversight
  • Physical Demands

  • May be required to lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Regularly required to sit, stand and walk about the facility – occasionally spending extended periods of time standing, and bending or stooping
  • Occasional (<10%) travel to suppliers  
  • Work Environment

  • Works in both an office and laboratory environment
  • Occasionally exposed to dust, odors, fumes and noise


Bachelor of science in metallurgical engineering, materials science engineering, or related engineering field
