Requisition Summary

PACCAR is looking for a User Interface Digital Artist to design creative, compelling, and intuitive interface solutions that enhance the user experience. The position can be located either in Mount Vernon, Washington at the PACCAR Technical Center or at Peterbilt Motors in Denton, Texas.  

You will be supporting PACCAR to create interface designs on the next generation heavy and medium duty trucks.  The skill set needed is related to on-screen visual design, motion design, and 3D graphic design as they are applied to embedded system architectures, primarily for in-vehicle displays and infotainment.  Other interface design work will include ADAS, Battery Electric Vehicles, and Autonomous Vehicles.  This position will ideally be filled with someone experienced in the automotive domain and not just mobile or web interface application development.  The role will collaborate across multiple PACCAR Divisions including Kenworth and Peterbilt but report to a UX Manager located in Mount Vernon, WA at the PACCAR Technical Center. Division Information

The PACCAR Technical Center provides engineering excellence to the truck, engine, and winch divisions of PACCAR Inc through innovative product development and testing. The Technical Center is located in the Skagit Valley about 65 miles north of Seattle, Washington. Peterbilt Motors is located in Denton, Texas.

Job Functions / Responsibilities

  • Design and develop user interface design continuity and harmony with current brand themes and ability to define future themes.
  • Work with the UX team (either directly or remotely) to develop brand specific user interface visual and motion elements that support a shared UX structure.
  • Create screen-level visual designs from low-fidelity sketches to hi-fidelity pixel perfect mockups. 
  • Consider and design flowing motion into graphics that include rendered possibilities using full 3D geometry.
  • Assist in the preparation of visual graphics and motion files to create prototypes.  This might include working closely with the usability test engineer and a software implementation team.
  • Collaborate with the rest of the UX team, other Industrial Designers, Vehicle Integration Engineers, Software Engineering, Product Planning, and Program Managers. Must be able to clearly communicate design to Sr. Leadership. 
  • Stay abreast of UX and UI trends and look for creative ideas / inspiration from parallel analogous worlds.
  • The position will require a fair amount of independent work and travel between multiple PACCAR locations.


  • 3+ years designing beautiful and effective interfaces; ideally for in-vehicle applications.
  • Ability to start the creative process through various design exploration techniques, research, mood-board creation, or storyboarding.  
  • Demonstrated proficiency in graphic design, motion graphics, digital art, sensitivity to typography, color, layout, and a general awareness of materials/textures.  
  • Working experience creating user interface designs and associated specifications with appropriate software tools for interface layouts.  An expert in Adobe CC Suite including Illustrator, Photoshop, etc.
  • 3D know-how and/or motion design know-how (e.g. Cinema 4D and After Effects)
  • Proficiency in typical office applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Visio, etc.
  • Understanding of in-vehicle display technology, associated HMI, and the typical automotive product development lifecycle.
  • Experience in the heavy truck industry desirable, but not necessary.  


  • Keen problem solving and organizational abilities are necessary among other soft skills. Creativity, passion, and attention to details are also key to success in this field.
  • UI designer is expected to be self-directed and collaborative. Must possess superb communication, time management, and process-management skills. Ability to clearly communicate conceptual ideas and design rationale to other members of the design, development, and leadership teams.  Being a good listener and gleaning the instructions from other stake holders necessary to iterate on designs via feedback gathering is an essential skill for this role
  • Proficient at interpreting the results from user research and act upon those results to iterate interface designs based upon that data.
  • Strong understanding of the user-centered design process and interaction design best practices and methodologies.
  • Ability to deal with a fluid and changing workflow based upon shifting priorities.
  • Ability to manage time wisely across projects and competing priorities, meet agreed upon deadlines, and be accountable for work.


  • A degree in Industrial Design, Graphic Design, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Usability Engineering, Interface Design, Visual Design in Computing, or similar vocational training that developed design skills.
  • A strong work portfolio that demonstrates application of pixel perfect and creative design skills is required.
