Requisition Summary

This position is located within the Advanced Powertrain organization at PTC and involves using engineering principles, testing, and analysis of various data sources to develop and optimize thermodynamic and thermal management systems.  The systems under development include next generation engines, aftertreatment, and conventional and electrified powertrains.  Additional responsibilities include interfacing with divisions (Kenworth, Peterbilt, DAF, PACCAR Parts and ITD), as well as working with external research and engineering organizations that are partnered with PACCAR.

Division Information

The PACCAR Technical Center provides engineering excellence to the truck, engine, and winch divisions of PACCAR Inc through innovative product development and testing.This position is located in beautiful Skagit Valley - Mount Vernon, WA.

Job Functions / Responsibilities

•    Analyze, develop, prototype, and test thermodynamic and thermal management systems including electric vehicle thermal management, advanced cabin climate control, waste heat recovery, and internal combustion engine processes.
•    Work closely with suppliers to identify and evaluate new concepts for energy conversion, chillers, and heat pumps
•    Optimize heat transfer and rejection equipment and techniques
•    Support evaluation of advanced thermal systems using the PACCAR Technology Readiness Level process
•    Develop control algorithms for optimized control of thermal systems
•    Analyze data from tests, connected vehicles, simulations, and other sources to inform PACCAR’s product strategy and support requirements development
•    Incorporate truck use data, technology evaluation data, benchmarking results, and upcoming regulations into detailed requirements for future thermal systems


•    5+ years of applicable experience
•    In-depth experience applying physics and the laws of thermodynamics to heavy-duty vehicle  powertrain development
•    Experience developing thermal systems (eg. refrigeration and heat pump system design, Rankine cycle energy conversion system layout, cooling system design, second law analysis)
•    Experience sizing and analyzing air/air, air/fluid, fluid/fluid, and phase change heat exchangers 
•    Ability to perform first and second law analyses of phase-change thermodynamic systems
•    Strong interpersonal and communication skills
•    Previously demonstrated strong technical knowledge, analytical skills, and organization skills
•    Be a self-starter and have demonstrated high levels of resourcefulness, initiative, and innovation.


Bachelors degree in an appropriate engineering discipline required.
